So, we are about done with the dash on the car. What is bothering me is this.... the wiper motor has 4 wires. That., and I don't see a brown wire on any of the 4,000 different wiring configurations on the 71 Super beetle which is what we suspect the car used for a donor. Can somebody help me figure out how to wire this to the relay? Thanks.

This help at all?

I'm assuming the aftermarket relay you're using has the terminals labeled, since the vw didn't have a wiper relay.
4 wires= low, fast, park and ground
'71 diagram

shows (same as i posted before):
31b (park switched ground): brown
53a (park power): black/violet
53 (low): black
53b (high): black/yellow or black/white
separate ground on wiper motor: 31: brown
later ones had a relay for intermittent wiper function. They used a green wire on wiper terminal 53e. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/for...hp?p=6254055#6254055 and the switch is wired differently between the two.
Ok... So here is the question... why am I missing a brown on the wiper motor? I can certainly add one and wore it as shown.. Thanks for the diagram and the help. I appreciate it. I wonder if I have a 5th, thats just a ground already grounded way up in the dash... perhaps I overlooked that. Thanks again. Keith
Maybe the missing wire is for the "park" circuit. Basically, with the ignition switch "on" you should have 12v. to the wiper switch....one pole on the switch for "low" speed wire and one pole for "hi" speed. The "park" wire can share the pole that feeds 12v. at the switch. The "park" circuit should be hot when the ignition switch is on to park the wipers when you turn the wiper switch to the Off position.
If that set up is from a '71 Super, it had 2-speed wipers.
Green wire implies it's a wiper motor for a column switch. They probably cut that park wire because they tried to wire it to an earlier dash switch and kept blowing fuses.
Assuming you don't have the late column switch or some sort of universal dash switch with 53e terminal, try this to connect a late wiper motor to an early vw dash switch:
Using just the dash switch and swapping wires won't work because the early switch's 31 terminal is grounded. You'll have to use an extra relay to make the park function work. On each line below I've labeled the two terminals to connect, the --- indicates the wire connecting them. I've labeled your motor wiring colors as well.
switch 53a --- motor 53a (black/grey)
switch 53 --- motor 53 (black)
switch 53b --- motor 53b (black/yellow)
switch 30 --- +12V
switch 31 --- Ground
motor 31 (brown) --- Ground
relay 86 --- +12V (or to switch 30)
relay 85 --- switch 31b
relay 30 --- switch 53
relay 87 --- motor 53e (green)
Justin, did not see your reply until now... Thank You so much. Keith
WHat is the second wiring? Is that for use with a relay? Otherwise, I won't use a relay with your first suggestion right???
I am not 100% sure if your reply was for 2 different ways???
And I should also mention that the relay's +12V source needs to be switched (turned on by the ignition switch) not connected to constant power. The relay is energized in the park position and I don't want to drain your battery when the car is sitting. Though you can connect both +12v connections to a switched source if you want.

There's not two different wiring setups there, just one. I just separated the devices for clarity.
No they didn't use them. The relay is there to make the park function on his late wiper motor (column switch) work with an early dash switch. They are otherwise incompatible.
Ok... I am following you now... What specific relay would I buy? Think an auto parts store has it?
Just to clarify: 4 wires... low, high, ( switched) park (keyed hot) and ground this gives you low high and park

Yes they'll have them. Actually you said you had unused ones already in your dash, try one of those. Any universal 12V automotive relay will work. http://www.amazon.com/Absolute...rds=bosch+spdt+relay SPST or SPDT doesn't matter.
No relay....
Lightly and quickly just touch two wires at a time to a low amp 12v until the motor moves and go from there to figure high and low...not the best method but it will work.
Just be sure to set the mower gas can a reasonable distance away from the "test bench"

Two-speed VW motors are 5 wire, which as of today he says he has. High (black/yellow), low (black), park power (black/grey), park short (green), and ground (brown). If you don't have that 5th wire on 31b/53e connected and switched properly, the park function will not work. You might get lucky and it'll slow enough to stop when the park cam breaks the connection, but without the back EMF from shorting the motor through the 31b/53e connector for the dynamic braking, it can overrun and just keep going.
I think I will just leave the wipers on for looks and not try to hook them up...
Also to clarify I just use a $6.99 2 position aftermarket headlight switch
No, the one hot off the motor supplies power until the cam in the motor cuts power hence to you have park
yes it does.
