Hardware stores/ home depo for example, always have a selection of springs... for 2-3$ for two. maybe you can finD one of similar size there. Maybe check NAPA ( probably widest selection) as well... or autozone.
Bring your broken spring in for reference ( both for length and diameter reference to ensure it fits in the whisper arm).
That should get you home... then I would move the passenger spring to the drivers side to ensure appropriate pressure against the windshield. And move the other (potentially softer spring) to the passenger side.
Good luck,
I'd just buy a new matching (by year VW) arm (the attachment piece differs) and use it - maybe $8.
Thanks For the good ideas. FYI both arms are different lengths on my IM so I decided to email them for their source or if. I can buy a spring or arm from them.
I might even buy two new arms Just in case.
Maybe with luck it won’t rain on my way home Or I will rainX it before leaving
If the break is in the end hook itself, and not one of the coils, you can just bend a new hook with needle nose pliers. Alan did the same for me on my Carlisle trip a few years ago. It was actually an improvement, since the increased tension held the wiper tighter against the windshield at speed.
That might work thanks
@Jim Kelly well Jim gets the medal, I was able to use a vise at my in-laws and bent and stretched the spring and re-installed it. After testing it, the tension seems to be about the same so I should make it home without having it flapping in the wind.
In the few times that I have dealt with broken wiper arm springs, it always seemed to work better (less streaking and smearing) after I made the spring shorter.
