Two things: This time last year is when my "dreaming stage" began in earnest. I researched until Feb, actually went to the "factory" where the car was made, kicked some tires (I STRONGLY urge you do see one or more up close and personal) and then put some money down. I got a turnkey (finally deliverd in July), but many old timers here suggest buying used first time, so as to see what you're really getting into. Buying used keeps the $$ down, there are many good used cars available (so they say), and you can sell it for about what you paid, if still in good shape after a year or so. By then, you shopuld know what you want, and so can go buy a new one, or get a kit and do it yourself, or not -?-

As to cars near by, the site supports a sorting of members by zip code, and specifically how close to you. I am not sure exactly how to do this, but suggest you try it to see if there are SOCers near to you. You could ask one or more of the builders to suggest a customer of theirs near to you, maybe. That might work.
Karl - Absolutely you need to come to Carlisle (PA in May) for the largest annual Speedster gathering. Several of the manufacturers will be there (Intermeccanica, Beck, JPS) along with quite a selection of personally-owned cars. It's a blast and you WILL become hooked. Hey, it's what happened to me.

I'm sure you'll be able to get a few rides or even drives to compare brands.
