Will it shift with the car not running and then won't shift with the car running?  If so the issue will be in the clutch adjustment or the pressure plate itself.

If it won't shift anytime, ever, then it may be an adjustment, HOWEVER you can usually find at least  a few gears which will give you an idea of which direction you need to adjust.

If it has been sitting for a long time, the clutch disk might have become stuck to the flywheel so that stepping on the clutch pedal feels normal and the pressure plate disengages, but the disk is still stuck so it won't let you shift into gear.   This can sometimes  be fixed by rocking the car forward and back in 2'nd gear with the engine not running while someone holds the clutch pedal fully down.

But if you can't get it in gear...

He said running or not so maybe the linkage is not connected or maybe the shifter is loose.
