The engine is finally in the car. There aren't any gears in the transmission and Sartwell hasn't looked over the motor, but it's not leaking and I can build the tube supports for the transmission plate now. I have to do the same square-box tubing as was done for the dash for the rear half, and I need to have the tranny support in place to build up from it. When the TR headrests are here and grafted onto the rear shell, I can make the hoops to contour to the front of the headrests.
I bought some Kumho tires just to roll it around the shop. If anyone's using Kumhos, I'd sure like a report on how they hold up. They're H rated and got A marks from the DOT. No telling how well they'll work on the autocross course until I try, but I'm hoping they're at least good enough for the initial trip to PA in May.
The third photo is the hinge thingie in the front. Even with this out as far as it is and as low as it is, hinging the front caused the removal of the amber lights in order to clear the ground when it's laid forward. I'll be using the parking light sockets for my turn signals now. That steering box is history. I'll detail the new steering system in a couple days, but if you've seen a sand frame or a Baja, you've seen what's going in.
Thanks for the feedback, too! It's encouraging. Even Jim -- not usually inclined to read website comments -- has looked at what y'all have said and smiled. He's going to be making the Bug-Out circuit with this thing when we're done. He should; he's doing all the mechanical work. He also asked me to pass along that this gang is a lot more friendly than clubs he's interacted with before.
