I've been looking around for a good used 74m crank, stock VW journals, nothing special really and haven't been able to turn one up. Nothing on TheSamba even.

It's for a quick 'n dirty engine, so buying new isn't on the menu, but if anyone has a 74 that they want to sell, please get in touch, would you?

Thanks,

T

You wouldn't believe how hard it's been to locate a 74mm, I think that it's the only really safe drop-in and everyone either has them and wants to keep them or is running a 76mm instead. Seriously, I've been checking all over and haven't found a good used one yet.

The one that I have, needs a polish (no biggie) but has the flywheel wedge mated to it and nobody here can remove it.

Anyone know of a shop in Coastal Massachusetts or Rhode Island who can separate the flywheel from the crank for a reasonable price?

Gotta get SOMETHING together early this Winter to toss into the Fiat to test the car/chassis/suspension/etc.

Thanks-
If you can't get someone to press it out (that's a surprise, given the marine machine shops in your area), make a stack of concrete blocks to support the crank/flywheel as a mushroom (flywheel sitting across the top of the blocks, crank hanging below, vertically, preferably within the center hole of a 3-hole block stack).

Remove the gland nut and find a suitable impact socket or 1+" dia pin to fit clear within the ID of the flywheel gland nut hole and against the crankshaft end (not into the threaded hole).

Heat the piss out of the flywheel area just around the gland nut hole to make the flywheel metal expand - use an oxy-acetylne torch, not MAPP or Propane....The flywheel will absorb a lot of heat before expanding so find a blow-torch tip and use lots of heat. The flame area should be like a foot long and have a spread of 3"-4" (good, blow torch spread).

After heating it all around the hole for 5 minutes + (it should begin to turn dark red around the hole), tap the punch shaft smartly with a 3# hammer. If it doesn't let go in three smart taps, then heat it again and smack it again.

If that doesn't loosen it in three cycles, then give up (but it should).
