good looking out rich!

I spoke to the gent and am hopefully seeing it this Saturday.
He seems to be asking quite the top dollar for the unit. I hope he can see the light and price it closer to the going price (cheaper than brian's!!!). We shall see. It pretty much comes with the same stuff as Brian's, is a year older, and has double the miles.

Do you guys see a lot of people actually being able to sell a Beck like above for asking $25k and getting away with it?

p.s.
-Brian, it seems that you are quite the craigslist searcher. I think I saw the ad on monday and emailed immediately ;). Do you know if that guy in fremont, the one with the red vintage, ever sold his? Also, what other cars do you look for? I pretty much check out anything 'cool', from hi boys to new amg's etc etc.
What surprised me the most was that, during around the same time Brian posted his spyder for sale), there was a guy in santa clara/san jose that had a GTD-40 for sale!!! It looked so pristine. I emailed himt he day his ad expired but received no reply.

Oh what I would do to drive a original looking AND sounding gt-40 around the block. I don't know if it could be insured.

H-m-m-m-m...Last time I checked this was a free market, meaning if someone wants to attempt to sell a rusted out '72 Vega for $75K, they're free to do so.

I haven't noticed anyone trying to "get away" with selling anything on this board. They post their price and you're free to buy or not. Capitalism in it's purest form.

I kinda doubt that you'll be able to "get away" with buying a decent Spyder for 15K, like you posted on this thread.

I have no idea...
.
re pricing - the Florida Spyder that I'd nearly bought supposedly had 2 offers of $25K (stock Beck 2003 2.3 liter/160hp - very low mileage - good tlc - maybe even a bit "fresher" than Brian's. Don't know if he sold it or not.
.
I don't follow other makes other than the spyders....or once in a while speedster replicas.
I don't think you will be able to register a Beck Spyder in CA anymore. I did some checking, and the specially constructed vehicle exemption(SB 100) probably would not apply, you could try it, but it would be a shame to have a car like that and not be able to drive it. A Beck is not made by an individual, so unless you are going to lie on the registration app, the car will not be smog exempt. If it is a 2001 Beck, it has to pass 2001 smog regs in California. I had planned to sell my Super Beetle convertible and use the proceeds for a deposit on a new Beck, but after researching it, did not want to risk having a car that I could not register.
I understand it's a free market, and I understand that buyers pay what they are willing to pay.

I asked if becks priced like this do sell because I know of 2 other becks with similar build dates, options, and mileage that were sold at asking prices of ~$5-10k cheaper than this one. The guy who sold the $16k Beck sold it quickly, *but it took some time for the other guy selling his at $19-20k. These three spyders (the two that were sold in the past 5 months, and the one now that is listed) are all within 5-10 miles of eachother.

Also, there are two vintage spyders with similar miles and age going for $25-26k. They are all within 20 miles of eachother.

My previous posts were not meant to offend. It seems that sensitivity levels are quite high for the 'net. I'm into economics, majored in it, bus school, work in a finance/econ-related job------so, I'm just comparing similar goods (age, condition, options, etc.) and different prices.

Hope I 'get away' with this one.
Dino,
Price is reflective of the market. A newer Vintage Spyder usually will sell for more than if you went and ordered one. Mainly becuase it may take 2-3 years to get a new one from the time you order. That's just the market. The same is true of a Beck on a lesser scale because the build is much faster.

Any custom hand-built car is going to have it's problems. So one that has been sorted out and available now, is worth more to some people.

Look at the housing market in CA. You will see the same thing. A house that is 3 months old, may be worth 30k more than it was when the owner ordered it and they are still "getting away with it".

Speedster dealers are the best example. Vintage Speedsters will build a car for you in 1 month, with all the options you want. A dealer will show that same car on a lot, with the options they chose, and a 5k premium. Vintage Speedsters builds 200+ cars a year, a large portion is sold through dealers.

Having it now is key in the US market.

I had no problem registering the previously smog-exempt Spyder I bought earlier this summer - simple process...wait in line at DMV - pay tax and fee, and transfer registration.
.
registering a new one seemed like it would be problematic - with risk and lining up for one fo the 500 replica exemptions allowed on January 1, 2006 (which were all gone on January 3rd 2005 - )

If you read the law,

"580. A "specially constructed vehicle" is a vehicle which is built for private use, not for resale, and is not constructed by a licensed manufacturer or remanufacturer. A specially constructed vehicle may be built from (1) a kit; (2) new or used, or a combination of new and used, parts; or (3) a vehicle reported for dismantling, as required by Section 5500 or 11520, which, when reconstructed, does not resemble the original make of the vehicle dismantled. A specially constructed vehicle is not a vehicle which has been repaired or restored to its original design by replacing parts.

Amended Ch. 1286, Stats. 1983. Effective January 1, 1984."

So if you build the car from a kit, you are okay, but a Beck is assembled in sunny southern California, and I am relatively certain that Chuck Beck Motorsports is licensed in the state. Perhaps if you got it without a motor, and installed the drivetrain yourself, but even there, you are on thin ice. It may be that they would not care if it was assembled by the individual or the good people at Beck, but the law is pretty clear, question is how closely do they follow it. The 500 exemptions were all gone on January 4 this year, 2 working days is a pretty short time. Not trying to be a jerk, but it changed my mind. I would agree that a previously registered car purchased from an individual would be no problem
