A little more info, Tab......If you don't mind;
Is this for a stock 1,600 or has it been modified at all?
Dual port heads or single port.
Most likely we would steer you towards small EMPI or Kadron carbs, but the single versus dual port info is important.
Remember, if you go from a single carb to duals, you'll need a throttle linkage kit from somewhere as well.
Bunch on TheSAMBA too -- in $200 range (but might want rebuild/gasket set if they have been sitting):

That 009 isn't the best distributor for dual Kadrons. You may see a flat spot at low acceleration.
these are a great improvement over a single solex. I have two motors for my car, both run Kadrons.
I agree with the 009 distributor comment. You'll be better off with Kadrons (and the EMPI's, too) if you run a vacuum equalizer of some sort and a vacuum distributor (or an SVDA, if you can find one that works with whatever carbs you choose).
I'd recommend the Solex 35 PDSITs and an SVDA distributor. Get them pre-jetted from aircooled.net.
I got a set for a buddy with a sandrail and installed them. One jet change(it was an 1835 not a 1600 like he said) and it has never run this good. Electric chokes are nice as well. John Connelly is one of the best in the business, and it was easy to get jets. I ended up one size up on mains and idles. These carbs don't have a progression circuit or emulsion tubes, they go directly from idles to mains pretty simple.
To synch them a snail is needed(with an adapter, which can be a piece of 2"ID hose). Once synched, they stay that way, set them and forget them.
Tab, I have a pair of Italian Weber ICT 34 s with ported and polished manifolds for a dual port engine with linkage and air cleaners. No chokes. I had them on my old 1641 engine and they worked ok but they will need to be rebuilt . The manifolds are tapped for equilizer tube , as should be. Send me PM if interrested. Al
I swear I saw Danny adjusting carbs at Carlise with nothing but a soda straw and beer can snap tab? Purrr like a kitten.

Beer can snap tab?
I thought that was a guitar pick!
I suppose the beer can thingie would be better when dealing with MASSIVE FLAMES like that, tho......
