looks like a nice car. 4 wheel discs..might be a newer version. I'm not into that puke green interior though. The rest of the car has great features.

Owner kinda sorta' sounds like a conman but I'm probably wrong. Now what.. you have to send a wire to Saudi Arabia 'cause he's in the desert buying a camel herd and won't be back for the end of the auction?..or his latest big aquisition... a Veyron from Prince CJ'
Don't let the interior color bother you. Ship it here, I'll dye it any color you want.

I was up in WA last week. Would have been glad to look at the WA one. Don't know diddly squat about VWs but I have pretty good sense for making sure of what is or what is not a good car.

Will, I've been finding out quite a few sellers are trying to sell their vehicles as a tube chassis when they're actually a VW pan chassis, particularly with IMs. Henry Riesner has been very helpful by walking me through the maze. Apparently anything from 1975 to 1986 will be a VW pan chassis. VINs and chassis pictures are a big help, but I suspect a lot of sellers don't want to give out the VIN for other reasons.

Angela, shucks I've been having a hard time trying to find someone to inspect the car in Tacoma, WA. The guy hasn't called me back so I may have to keep looking, shucks ,the fun continues. Hey, maybe if I find a car but don't like the leather color, I could have you come to Hawaii to dye it!

If the vehicle has a conforming VIN, I'll give it out during the sale.

But on cars with less than 17 digit and any non-conforming VIN (which will be most of the cars you are looking at) I would not give it out until I absolutely had to - like at the point where I know who you are, where you are from, etc. On ebay, I would do it because it is required and because it is such a public site. I've also sold on Autotrader.com where the VIN must be disclosed. If that's the rules - I comply. But otherwise, I am pretty discreet about the VIN.

Alot of internet theft out there right now. People will still pictures they see online or that they take at a car show, provide the VIN and try to sell the car. Collect the deposit and disappear. They provide the VIN as a way to provide (false) authenticity. I've caught people doing this a couple of times on ebay with 911's and have gotten their auctions stopped. Alot of craigslist scams with this as well - usually high dollar cars that attract out of the area attention. Obviously they dont' want to sell to anyone local - they want an electronic transaction, or western union, etc.

When I display a car at a show, I slide a business card over the VIN if it is in the windshield (standard location for a public VIN). I know it sounds paranoid, but I actually caught someone writing the VIN down on my Dad's Monte Carlo Aerocoupe at a show. I'm like...Uhhh....can I help you? Apparently I couldn't because he abruptly walked off.

Not a done deal yet but got a price on a 1988 IM Roadster Convertible "D", $22,000 in Washington state. He has a 2330 cc motor in it which I guess equates to about 20 to 25 MPG. A little lower than what I was wanting but I could live with it.

White on tan with approximately 19,000 miles. A black 1/4 tonneau. Has radio and heater but everything else sounds minimal, just how I want it.

Seller says the hydraulic ram on the hood won't hold the hood up, won't shift from 3rd into 2nd, ($1500 fix?) "heater sucks", radio buzzes (which I equate to the high voltage coil, or something he had installed).

Waiting from Henry so I can arrange can inspection. Will keep you posted.
Ed,
Even though it's an IM I think that's a pretty high price for one so old. I bought my 2001 for $24.5K with 04300 miles and a good list of Henryoptions like all leather, all discbrakes, bumper guards, courtesy lights, radio with amp and four speakers, power antenna, zip out large rear window, dual mirrors, rear lapbelts, nardi wheel, seatback pockets, custom floor mats, all squareweave carpeting, dual range seat heaters, and 90 HP and the other features that make the roadsters so nice - the rollup windows, watertight top, cushy seats, and added extra soundproofing.

The frame makes the car stiff and quiet going down the road - no flexing makes for no squeeks, and the whole assembly results in a vehicle that's as solid feeling as a new Honda Accord.

I'm saying it's worth the wait for one of IM's later production cars because their methods are a model of continuous improvements. Mine's good, but I have no doubt that a 2006 is better in a hundred small ways.

(I was reading directly from the option list of my car. Henry was nice enough to send me their original order info data on the car even though it left his hands over ten years ago.)
Thanks Ken

I was with the understanding that around $22K to $24K I would get a good IM. As you can see, there are some things that need to be addressed. What scares me is dealing with the trans for this car right after paying for it.

Of course you have a good point in holding out for a more recent version with subtle refinements.

I do know where I can get some great Becks.
Ed, When I was looking I did an email to all the IM owners on the SOC site and it turned over a lot of leads... Some I wish I had been able to make happen. Some that weren't thinking of selling when they got my email got back in touch shortly after because circumstances had changed etc, and they decided to sell. I just sorted by Manufacturer at the REGISTRY key on this site and and then I emailed to all the owners of cars that I really liked. May be worth a shot if you are dead set on a Roadster like I was...Good Luck. Chris

To you all,

It’s been a while since my last post but I finally pulled the trigger and bought Tom’s merlot 2005 Chamonix, I ‘m having it inspected right now and hope to have it shipped to Hawaii by next week.

Sadly, this will end this thread but I’ve learned a lot from you folks at SOC and Carey at Specialty Edition/Beck.  Thanks SOC and Carey!

I hope to contribute more to the forum as my journey continues.

Thanks CR,

Kauai also has some beautiful drives.  Too bad the Super ferry didn't make it, could have been crusing with the outer island tubs.

Thanks Tom,

Glad to be aboard (or soon to be). Actually, I'm from your neck of the woods, wolverine territory.

I can say truthfully, the madness started in the hunt.  (My wife is still trying to understand why I was so engrossed in finding a 356).  Little does she know the real madness hasn't even started........

Howzit!

Yes,definitely hit me up when/if you have time to meet up and we can check out each others rides.

The mirrors unfortunately are drilled into the fender by the PO and if I had my way I would have only 1 mirror (driver side ofcourse)and they would not be so far out on the fenders. I can live with it,however if I paint the car ever,I will get rid of the other mirror.

Well, I can finally end this thread as my car arrived from Ohio!  I picked it up this morning and you would not believe the attention it got as I was trying leave

the parking lot, let alone the people at the guard booth!  Anyway, got on the road to drive home (the long way, naturally!) and you would not believe the smile I had on my face all the way home to beautiful Kailua (80s, clear and sunny)!  Still trying to wipe the smile off my face.

Thank you all for the support through the research and purchasing of a great car!  The fun continues as I start personalizing this tub of mine.
