Marty:
The holes are drilled to make the rack lighter so as to not decrease your top speed, and also to reduce the 'lift' the rack gives to the rear of the car. You don't want to rear wheels to lift off when you are doing one hundred and twenty.
First he posts about his knob. Now he wants a nice rack. What's next? Might be time to report to site moderator.
Marty looks like he'll be packing more shoes during future trips.
There's an AMCO on SAMBA for $200 (NOT MINE)

There are also Stainless Steel Leitz ones there (~$330) and on ebay
And a Reutter one for $600

Thanks Greg. Two questions.
1. Does anyone know if the Amco style is easy to install and remove? I'll just be using on long trips.
2. Can the chrome be powder coated over? I would prefer a Satin finish or a body matching color.
I have the AMCO on my CMC. The OEM standoffs were too short to go thru grill and mount to fiberglass rain shield. I used Lowes chrome bathroom delivery tubing and longer SS bolts (or all thread). I used Nyloc nuts inside engine compartment but you could use lock washers and wing nuts to make it easier to remove. You will need large SS washers to distribute load on fiberglass. AMCO chrome is thin - suspect it could be sand blasted and powder coated.
I do prefer the look of silver-grey hammer painted Reutter rack over the AMCO. Surprised there aren't repros made.

It's been a while since I've said this... (but someone has to)
Greg - you need to get in the garage and finish that sucker!
Ted
So here is what I think: Wolfgang has taken so long on his car that he has forgotten how to drive it. Ergo, he does not need to finish it. But we love him just the same because he knows EVERYTHING about everybody else's cars, the parts that go on them, where to get them, how much they cost, and like that. Plus, more often than not, he actually HAS the part in question somewhere in the garage/basement.
;-)
Ha, Alan is in hospital for week and returns and gets more done in day than I in a year!
Sierra Madre did have some Reutter racks for $425.

Here's the way I see it, Greg spends so much time helping others here, ( a good thing) he has not time for his build...when his puter' finally takes a crap the speedy will get done !
We love you Greg!
If he was closer I'd suggest that we stage an intervention.

Marty - for visual reference, here are some pics of my Reutter rack I've had for years (from my '57 1600S coupe). I kept it as chrome on my previous VS.
Since then, I've put it on my new VS. Cannot powder coat over chrome. I had the rack de-chromed in a chemical process reverse of chrome-plating. Then had to belt sand the areas where copper plating was not totally removed. De-chroming process was $100 (at shop specializing in chrome), powder coating was another $100 (at shop specializing in powder coat).

Yes Ray. I think most of us would agree that replica racks are as good as real racks and as they age a replica rack may hold up much better.
Marty, you can't expect all the posts to have useful information.
Marty: I have never seen a Reutter rack with round holes (but I've seen a bunch of the slotted hole ones). The holes are slotted to accept the luggage straps.
The welds on that round hole version are pretty sucky looking so I would think it is a custom one-off.
The repro versions from Sierra Madre are a great price. I would call them to see if they can sell one either in raw metal or primer (I see painted ones all the time around here) which would be great for powder coating. I had an Amco rack on a Mustang decades ago and, to be honest, it's pretty basic. The Reutter rack is much classier.

MUSBJIM,
You are the master of the rack. Well, not so much the rack per se, but what you do with it. Totally awesome. And I am lovin' that new ride of yours more and more. You have the Speedster thing down and down right.
I have been researching racks and I think that round hole one is probably a knockoff of the Reutter. Gordon is right I think.
Other than that one picture you posted, I've never seone another.
Ill look some more.
I think the round hole rack was offered as an option from Boone & Crocket. It's the 'Hog Hauler'.
SM says currently unavailable.
I like it, slots, round holes, whatever. Powdercoat yes, chrome no.
Now that's a nice rack.
