Hi Guys,

I've been stalking the forums for a while now as i've worked out logistics (garage space, wife approval), but now the hunt is on. I'm not terribly handy and while i'm open to using this as a means to learn, I'm a few years into running my own growing business so time is extremely limited... so the newer (but still sorted out) the better. I've driven one of the JPS suby's with stiffer suspension which i really liked.

I'd like to keep the look as close to original as possible, so much as I admire the widebodies, they're not for me.

Color preferences may be a pipe dream but would prefer blue or red exterior with brown/grey interior.

Budget is around $25k - $30k.

If anyone knows of some coming up for sale... Please let me know.

Cheers

devin

If you're not mechanically inclined, or don't have the time to fiddle with these cars, buying a well-sorted water cooled speedster is the way to go.

That being said, a well built air cooled engine, with mild power, is a good choice too, if you have a mechanic who knows how to work on these engines.

Generally speaking, a speedster with a mild air cooled engine will be considerably cheaper than a speedster with a water cooled power plant.

As Wolfgang mentioned, Beverly Hills Motorcars has a reputation for over pricing their cars.  Kevin at Beck can build you one, but since you are in Southern California, I would suggest you at least contact fellow SOC member Kevin Zagar.  He is in San Diego and can build what you are looking for and include the very cool Mendiola front suspension.

Thanks for all the great information guys. I should have started by saying how much i've already learned from pouring through these forums. It's a great community, very helpful.

Robert, i've been looking all over to find a beck locally that matched my wishlist or at least came close. Last night this one got posted to CL http://orangecounty.craigslist.../cto/5154959540.html  I'm just waiting to hear back. But good call on reaching out to Carey. I'll do that.

Troy, thanks for the recommendation on Kevin. I'll reach out.

I'm also waiting for a response back from http://orangecounty.craigslist.../cto/5151864218.html. I'm not sure i want an engine that big, but I will know the car when i find it, so who knows?

Thanks again!

Just took a look at BH Motorcars.. i've seen a lot of their stuff elsewhere and thought it was overpriced, but didn't realize how much more inventory they had on their site. Matter of fact, found my ideal car but it just happened to be a coupe instead and i'm set on the speedster.

Not sure why that link didn't work. here it is again: http://orangecounty.craigslist.../cto/5151864218.html

Haven't seen that Beck before but thanks for the heads up.. CL is such a crapshoot.. i'm casting a much narrower net geographically for CraigsList because of the high likelihood of headaches and misinformation. That Beck (if in Newport Beach) is only one town away from me.

I emailed Kevin.. i'll keep y'all posted.

Based on the chassis number (356000003) that is a very early Beck.  You'll notice the different arrangement of switches on the dash, and I believe the turn signal lever and assembly was added on rather than integrated into the steering column.  That, along with the small engine might explain the price.  Still, it looks like a bargain if the condition is good.  Certainly worth checking out.

I've been told, but have never confirmed, that when looking at cars on the BH Motorcars website that the cars with prices listed are cars they actually have for sale.  Cars that say "Inquire" about the price are cars they have sold.  They want you to call so they can sell you one of the others or become the middleman for a car you could get yourself if you had the time to look at every ad.

Thanks for the info Lane. I heard back and he's not able to show it during the week, so i'm going to try to set something up this weekend.

Not often you come across a 2332cc engine with a dual barrel carb.  I wonder if the owner ever got it dialed in properly.

The red car looks much nicer, but photos can be deceiving.  The only way to tell for sure is to see them in person and take them for a drive.

I VW-fanatic friend of mine and I talked to his mechanic who said pretty much the same thing. He said they're too big for the vehicle and cause a domino effect of issues. Maybe for the best, i never heard back from that person anyhow.
