You want the CMC Vintage gauges or the VDO classic ones (Cockpit Royale series)? The Vintage ones are still around used or NOS but be sure to get all senders (including the gas gauge sender). VDO quality is much better (2-3x cost though unless you stumble on used ones). VDO has/had a gold face with brass trim Heritage series too - but it looks more 1930's than 1950's.

Do a search on Forum for CMC Vintage gauges - there were some for sale a year ago. They were pushed by CMC (an extra $325 for set of 5 in 1989) for all their kits -- MGTD, Speedster, Gazelle - so many out there although some for Chevette/Pinto water cooled engines. I sold mine for less than $100 after I cut the holes and wired them--- argh!
If your dash is cut out already for the Vintage gauges - you have to do fiberglass work to fit the VDO gauges as the Vintage ones are bigger.
For cost and reliabilty - Porsche 914 gauges are good option. Black face but that could be changed out.

Interesting, if budget allows:

thanks , will check them out.
Gordon might have that set for sale.
Check out www.speedhut.com they have been doing gauges for us for three years now and every set is great. They can build almost anything you want. Pick a gauge and go down to the bottom of the page and design your own gauge. Even the name across the middle.
I have a set of original CMC "Vintage" gauges, but they're black-faced. I'm replacing them, unused, with a different set, so these are probably going to be for sale.

thanks, I will keep them in mind, appreciate the feedback.
Gordon - WOW mint still in box! You bought a time machine with that NOS kit. The black and the bras trim ones are far less common than the white faced ones.
got a set of unused white gauges here......A wee bit far from you though...

I have a white set (they are kind of cream colored - not appliance white) from CMC, new in the box, still in the original wraps.
$175 delivered in CONUS.

These are the guages - turns out they are white-white not the off-white I remembered them being. It's been a while since I put them a way - LOL!
Lance has first pic - after that any one who wants them for $175 delivered in CONUS can have them.

OK, this is kind of funny. Lance had emailed me and asked if the mounts and bulbs where there. All he bulbs are in the guages. The cross bar mounts are missing but the threaded portions on the guages for the mounts are perfect as you might expect for ones that probably haven't been out of the box.
But I realized there was something in the bottom of the box, so I took the box apart. In the bottom was the warranty paperwork (ha!) and the fuel sendor unit!
Maybe I should go open some of those other boxes I got when we picked these kits up - no telling what's in them. Definately going to have to do a Laneco Garage Sale...

I have the vintage guages and my gas guage is pinned past full, is it because of a stock vw sending unit?
Try removing the sending unit from the tank and working it outside of the tank. If it causes the gauge needle to swing, then it's probably mis-adjusted. If it doesn't you'll need a new/different sender.
I'll pull my sender tomorrow (it's in a box, not in a car) and measure the resistance at it's limits and report back so you'll know.

Thanksgordon, I did remove it and put a meter on it and it does seem to work, but not sure it matches up with the vintage repro guage??? I'll keep an eye on your next message Thanks again
Bob:
OK, up against the stop on the sender in both directions;
Full reads about 30 ohms
Empty reads about 260 ohms
I would give the readings + or - 10%, since this isn't a Simpson or digital meter, just an el-cheapo from Radio Shack.

".....pinned past full"... First check for a good ground. ~Alan
All grounds check out, If were to go with a VDO guage, would i need a new sending unit?
Maybe.
Depends on which VW sender you have and which VDO gauge you wanna use.

Most likely - plus you'd have to fill gap around the gauge as the VDO gauge is smaller than the VINTAGE one. Post picture of sender - the VINTAGE one was way different than the VDO stock one.
