I know I keep getting myself all wound up over Carlisle, and I know it's still 4 weeks off, but I am seriously psyched about it this year - for obvious reasons. After one year of watching and dreaming, and another of watching the dream become real, I finally get to bring my own car. I've got it at my friend's shop right now getting a thorough going over prior to the trip (bad timing as it's going to be a perfect weekend) and am really looking forward to the drive - particularly day 2 through the mountains with Hoss, Cory, and whoever else wants to join. Man is this gonna be fun!

Anybody who is interested in these cars, and sitting on the fence about coming - get off that fence before you put another crease in your butt!! It's more gearhead fun than you can imagine! WOOHOO!!! Four weeks and counting!!

I'll drink to that!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. These cars are way more fun than I anticipated. Carlisle is where I really got educated and serious about owning and it was because of the build of Lane's car. There's nothing like seeing and touching a real car after drooling over pictures on the internet. If your interested in owning one - you gotta go!!

Lane I'm in the same boat. First time with MY OWN CAR!!!! Can't wait.
Good news and bad news about the Shannendoah (sp?) stopover, Lane. Dave, whose house was going to be the rally point, is getting ready to go over "there" again.
He leaves in 14 days. We will now have to find our own path along Skyline Drive, if we still want to do that.
Just FYI.
I'm still up for it if you are Lane. I assume that this diversion from the I-81 straight shot will not make us late for our arrival, late afternoon in Carlisle? I think it's a fantastic opportunity to see some really beautiful country that I have already seen, but from a different perspective (ie. the parkway). I assume, Cory, that your plan is to drive down to a predetermined rally point and we would then all proceed together to our destination.

Just raising the concern because, as Bilbo Baggins put it so eloquently, "adventures make one late for supper." Not to mention happy hour....
I think I'll pass on the very southern end of the run, and instead save a bit of time and heat on Thursday; I'll hit the southbound lanes while you guys head north.
My test-and-tune business included a PA run yesterday, and the Sloppy Jalopy used 5.3 gallons of gas to go 130 miles ... but she was running at about 215 degrees the whole time.
I got some stuff to tweek ... but the long solo southern run means a lazy drive if I want to keep temps low; I would rather cruise at an average of 70-75 to intercept.
Thoughts?
Lane, do you still want to do the Blue Ridge Parkway? It looked to me that we could cut across on route 43, north of Roanoke at Buchannan and ride the parkway north to where it runs into I-66 and follow I-66 west to I-81 and on to Carlisle. I'll look at it again later, but it seems like that would give us pretty much what we want.
Hoss
I can go beyond Front Royal (66/81 intersection) if I haven't caught you yet, and then return down the 66 with you guys to make a left on 81.
And Hoss, I will probably be wearing a Hawaiian shirt. (THOSE guys won't bother reading this thread ... so I can diasvow the shirt later.)
lol
The Tail of the Dragaon, route 129, and the Cherohala Skyway, which make up the "Dragaon Loop" is perhaps the best drive in the area. Yes, I am very familiar with this run. A year ago last October, my neighbor and I did a run for the Allard Club and it was the most fun drive I think I have ever been on. I have some pictures posted of the event.

I would appreciate details on the SC run if you are going to be involved. Perhaps we could meet up at some point if weather and schedules allow. The only problem with weekends is that it is very crowded, mostly with bikers. Our two-wheeled friends come literally from all over the world to ride that 11 mile stretch of 318 curves.

Cory:

215F is hot, but it isn't too bad, as long as it doesn't go much higher. I always start to get worried around 218, get pretty concerned around 220-225 and down right pull over towards 230. I know that "other" Porsches, both original and replicas, sometimes go a tad higher than that upper limit, but MY car doesn't. I don't want to risk it.

I think the Gene Berg oil temp dipstick switch blinks your oil light at 220, and lights it solid at 225, telling you to stop before you cook or seize.

Sounds like you might be a candidate for a fan-powered external cooler...if you don't have one already.
