So... I'm getting ready to remove the engine in my speedster, I'm going slowly as I've never done this on a VW. Got everything disconnected, wires, fuel line, cables etc., no problems. Next thing is to locate the 4 bolts that hold the engine on and get them to move a little before I get ready to take the weight off.  No problem with the top passenger side or the bottom 2 bolts. If I am looking in the right place,  above and to the left of the clutch lever, there is an empty hole!  Isn't that supposed to be about a 3" bolt through trans into the engine? I'm kind of surprised because it doesn't look like that tough a place to reach.  Is it possible that I've been driving this car for 6 years without it?

Anyway, anyone have an idea what size and type of bolt this is or the best place to get one?

There is one "weird" bolt on a VW, but I can't remember if it is the driver's side or the passenger side top bolt.  You'll know, because it has a flat on one side to allow clearance to get it in.  If you don't have a bolt with a half-moon head, it's probably missing.  (Although I'm having thoughts that the weird bolt is on the Starter side......)

Not to worry, though, IIRC it's just a semi-normal 10mm X 1.5 pitch but I can't remember the length (Plus, I've been working on an '83 VW Watercooled for the past month to confuse me).  Usually you can get one at a local hardware store and then grind off the head to fit - the half moon will keep it captive while you tighten it.  Metric or SAE - it doesn't matter as long as the bolt shaft fits the hole and is the right length to get a flat washer and a lock washer on the nut end.  I have a few kicking around here.....want me to through them in the bin with everything else?

Thanks Gordon. The flat sided bolt is the top bolt on the starter the one that's  missing is on the driver's side. It might go to a welded nut but the engine is coming out anyway so it will be easy to figger out then. I'll bet I can get one at Ace.

I was just a little freaked that I drove it for 20,000 miles without ever noticing it.

Roger that, Al.  Should not be a big deal, thanks.

I'm sure I'll come up with a few more stupid questions as I get farther into this project. I still have several more things to address before I'm back on the road. It kills me to take it off when the weather is still so nice here but some stuff has to get fixed before Spring.
