This post isn't intended to discredit Rancho Transaxle (maybe a little) . I realize that Shit happens. I'm just getting a little puchy from getting more than my share.
"Thank your Sirs may I have another!"
I enjoy working on my cars, but I really thought my Red Speedster was "ready"
I finally got the Carburation (44 Weber IDF's) pretty close. I decided to bring it to Carlisle, so I'm still dialing little stuff in.
The Trans that I got with the car was an "unknown". So after installing it, and deciding grinding into 2nd gear wasn't going to cut it. I decided to get a rebuilt tranny... a good one from one of the big names in the Industry.
The last major component I installed was a Pro Street Rancho Trans.
Those are the good guys right!
I figured out what gear ratios are available, consulted with Rancho and ended up getting a Pro Street 3:88 Ring & Pinion IRS tranny from them. It took 6 weeks to get. I called them when the tranny came because it looked like it sat in the snow for about 10 years or so. I know it's only cosmetic, but dammit I sent them a Cherry core that I stored inside since 1980. I thought I'd save some time by paying core charge then sending my core when their shipping box came. My Mistake. The arm on the cross shaft was worn and wobbly too ... too loose to trust with a kennedy clutch assy. So I had to replace it. Dammit. It's supposed to come with a welded cross shaft. You'd think they'd make sure the arm fit the splines on the shaft. OK so not a big deal, it's in, it's quiet, it shifts everything is good to go.
As I'm dialing in carburation and making some highway speed runs, I says to myself.. Hey wait a minute! I should be going 63 mph at 3000 rpm. Hey, I'm only going 57.
Now I go home and spend the evening checking gear ratios. Hey! they forgot to change the stock 4:12 ring and pinion to the 3:88. Funny the invoice lists those parts and I paid for them.
No problem, Rancho is going to pay the shipping and they're going to fix it for me. Wow that's over $120.00 I wasted shipping trannys back and forth to Calif. Now they're going to fix it for me and I get to R&R the tranny again. I guess Rancho expects customer participation (this is the 3rd time for R&R on this build). not to mention tranny oil. and now I got to come up with a 14x14x30 box to ship it in. The first trans took 6 weeks, Rancho says they'll turn this tranny around in a day so I should have plenty of time before Carlisle. So I says " Hey you guys should come to Carlisle with some of your stuff! Everyone uses it and I'll put a good word in... " Yeah right!
Moral of the Story... Even the companys that are known as the go to guys for quality and reilability makes mistakes... And ... sometimes you and I get to pay for them.
Remember these are the good guys. I almost went to another rebuilder to save a few bucks. What was I thinking.

Just taking a little break! Now it's back to the Garage! UPS is comming tomorrow to pick up this tranny!

The last three trans that I bought, two drag trans and a freeway flyer, were bought off of TheSamba from independent builders.

I honestly couldn't be happier ! ! ! No core charge, the freeway flyer was built my specs. The drag trans were built using all of the usual stuff to match shift points/RPM vs peak HP. All have worked out wonderfully and the prices were around half or less than the name brand builders.

The freeway flyer builder even included some extra axle tubes and nearly new pucks in case my axle spades were worn.

Luck!
When we got our 914 transaxle (for the spyder) back from the overhaul, the fellow evidently confused hisself and turned the ring n pinion.

We had five backwards and one forward gear. Fastest as$-backwards going car I have ever driven. You know, everyone should try shifting in reverse, its really a strange sensation... Neighbors thought we'd lost our minds!

I have dealt with Sam at Rancho for years for my transaxle parts as well as full trannys and I can honestly say that he has never disappointed me.

Rancho is a HUGE builder of all sorts of transaxles, VW is only one facet of what they work with. With all the volume they do it amazes me that they don't goof up more than they do, honestly.

They have goofed things up for me just a couple of times over the years, but they have always stepped up and made things right and thats what matters most...

BTW- I prefer the 4.12 R/P :-)
Jake,
I agree. Rancho's stuff is good. And they've been doing it forever. Sam is taking care of the trans problem. But that also includes R&R on my dime. When the occasional screw-up happens, it seems It usually on my stuff. I'm just lucky that way.
Have you ever gone to a nice resturaunt, ordered your meal, then all of sudden the Restaurant staff treats like you are invisible. Then you find out that the cook just quit and threw your steak at his boss... But don't worry it'll be ready for you in a few minutes. I hate when that happens... and it does...to me! Sometimes I would just like to skip a turn.
The Trans is on it's way to Rancho now, Sam assures me he'll have it back to me in plenty of time to fit my schedule to take the car to Carlisle.

Greg

PS I agree! The 4:12 R&P is more driveable around town, but I hate the buzz on Turnpike or higher speeds especially on long drives.
I wish there was something available in a five speed without selling the farm to get a Porsche box.
F0ll0W-UP ON RANCHO TRANS BY GREG B
My Bad...
This is how this turned out!
Sam from Rancho tore down the trans to find that it DOES already have the 3:88 ring and pinion that I ordered.
For whatever reason...the error must have been mine as I am assured by Rancho that all was it was supposed to be.
Sam of Rancho is going to reassemble make sure things are right and return the trans to me. No charge.

I can only speculate why my two cars show different results. Maybe my other 3:88 tranny has a taller 4th gear.
but:
both cars use the same odometer (magnetic pickup calclulated with the measured wheel circumferece) same tire brand and size. Tach on both cars verified against a 3rd tach to be the same.
plus Seat of the pants says one car revs higher than the other at 63 mph.
I expected to see 63 mph at 3000 rpm which I didn't...
I'll get the trans back next week, put it in knowing that Rancho built it, and verified it to satisfy a picky customer.
bottom line:
Thank You Rancho Transaxle for the help and the no charge trans. verification to a pickey customer.

Jake,
Yes, the cars have the same tire set up, but each was measured.

I use magnetic pick-up sensor driven speedo (bicycle speedo). For configuring the speedo, the tire circumference is used in the calculaion.
I measure the tire circumference. (with weight of car and running tire pressure, the car is rolled exactly 1 tire revolution to find circumference.)
On long(er) trips, I check by watching mile markers on the roads to find that they are tolerably correct.

I'm not sure why the RPM/MPH didn't end up at what Sam at Rancho said it would be.
My error was to assume the car I was comparing to DOES end up at the RPM and SPEED we calculated to be 63mph at 3000 rpm. The only thing I can figure is it has the taller 4th gear AND 3:88 r/p?

The cars are identical in wheel/tire diamater, speedo, & tach.

I'm going to compare again when I get the tranny back and in. This time I'll compare more than just 4th gear.

Saw your coverage in Hot VW's. Very Cool!
