Youse knuckleheads and your Subaru conversions.

There are some much better options out there for getting modern, light-weight, water-cooled power into a VDub platform.

Like this here one at Cars and Coffee this morning.

First off, you Subaru smart guys are starting all wrong. The motor should go up front. And boxer-schmoxer. Give me an inline four any day. See how there's plenty of room for one? And invoking the spirit of Colin Chapman, we're adding lightness, too. No carbon fiber panels, please - just ditch the hood and decklid altogether. You are proud of that Miata mill, right?

You may have noticed that to show off the engine, we've had to trim the cooling system a bit. No worries, that gets moved to the back where there's more room for it, anyway.

Of course, moving the engine does alter weight distribution a tad. The tiniest of wings has been added to restore some downforce on the rear wheels.

And no need here to hide the original gauge cluster just to keep the ECU happy. With careful reshaping of the original dash, you can work those instruments into a neat installation that blends right in. Even the Miata control stalks are reused.

But I saved the best part for last. No need to sweat over how you'll make the original gearbox work. Here, it drops right in without any turning or adding conversion junk. A direct linkage right into the box! Snick, snick, snick.

If you're willing to think outside of the box a little, there's always a better way.

Agreed! Here's what showed up Saturday morning at 5:30 AM at Katie's C&C here in  Northern Virginia. Not sure who did the 356 coupe but it was very well done. I should have taken an interior picture the seats were done up in a nice small checkered center pattern. The MB fire truck was very cool and functional. My son and I just did our first local C&C together, yesterday, at LalaJava Cafe in a nearby town, me in Pearl and he in his 996 (with dual carseats in back for the pit crew) but our group was no where near as impressive as that one above.  LOTS of P-cars showed up with a bunch of Audis and a few VWs and one Jag, but mine was definitely the oldest, no matter how you look at it.  Chris had his "Junior Crew Chief" with him and all three of us had a great time, even with iffy weather, but none of us took any pictures!  We'll have to get better at this at future events (like next weekend).

I parked between a couple of  2012 or later Porsches and made the nose line up even with theirs - Found that my 356 is about 2/3'rds the size of a "modern" P-Car.

Robert, other than no front plate and no wipers, I don't see anything that's obviously illegal. (He did drive this to C&C.)

I guess the Jack Daniels overflow bottle might qualify as an 'open container', but what else am I missing?

No front bumper, no rear bumper, no engine lid, no license plate light, no front plate, and no wipers. It's hard to tell from the angle but it might be too low. I'm sure it's a work in progress and he'll address all those issues in time. LOL
